Italian Culture And Food

Italy is a country with a rich and diverse history. It is no surprise that Italian culture and food share these deep roots. Italy's culture and traditions span centuries and have been shaped by political circumstances, conquers, wars, and even other regions of the country. This diverse background has led to all the wonderful variations of Italian food that we enjoy today.

One of the best ways to understand the varied culture of Italy is by learning how to make food from the country. Italian culture and food varies greatly from region to region, and village to village, however the main principal always remains the same. Italians cook with only fresh, local ingredients of the highest quality. Meals do not have to be elaborate and often are based upon the use of just a few key ingredients. Each dish takes on its own taste because Italians have perfected creating unique flavor combinations for centuries.

Many Italians will tell you that they grew up in the kitchen learning about Italian culture and food from loved ones. A vast majority of authentic recipes are handed down from generation to generation and often date back several centuries. This tradition educates each new generation on specific skills and cooking techniques as well as allowing youngsters to learn to truly appreciate the history of Italian food.

Italian culture and food help ensure customs and traditions are passed on. Parents and Grandparents teach their children not only how to cook, but also the importance and history of what they are cooking. The lessons on choosing the right ingredients, creating dishes that are healthy and delicious, as well as learning about their own family, and region make memories that last a lifetime. In Italy, food is often used to bring family and friends together. Once the meal has been prepared, it is customary that loved ones not only gather around the table to partake of the feast, but to also share stories and information. Preparation is done with great care, and therefore meals are not rushed through. A good deal of time is spent enjoying the meal and each other's company.

Eat! (Pray, Love) The healing power of good food

Whether you loved Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Eat Pray Love” memoir or rolled your eyes over its self-absorbed tone, most of us can agree on one thing: the author knows how to eat. She traveled to the land of exotic curries and spicy chutneys to find ...
